Quercus agrifolia - Coast Live Oak
  • Coast Live Oak (Quercus agrifolia) is the most quintessential, iconic native tree of California. Consistently filled with wildlife, it is a keystone species that is essential to the health and ecological balance of our communities.

As a mid-size evergreen shade tree, it is usually appropriate for both for residential and commercial landscapes.

With iconic twisting branches and a palatial canopy, this tree can live for centuries. The bark of the Coast Live Oak becomes attractively furrowed and dark gray as it matures, giving the tree its iconic appearance.

It has leathery, thick dark green leaves that are recognizable for their ovate, toothed shape with rolled-under edges. Inconspicuous female flowers and semi-showy male catkins yield acorns.

It is among the few California native oaks that can thrive closer to the coast, where it can thrive in fog and mild winters.
