Beach Strawberry (Fragaria chiloensis) is a terrific option for lawn replacement applications, especially when coupled with other walkable groundcovers.
This low-lying, spreading groundcover boasts beautiful white flowers from late winter to early summer. After pollination, these flowers are replaced by small red fruit. Native bees and butterflies appreciate its flowers, and friendly insects, birds, and mammals enjoy the fruit.
Beach Strawberry has glossy, dark-green leaves that turn red before dormancy in fall. It thrives in areas with very low to low moisture and sandy soil, where it will spread moderately over time.
Fragaria chiloensis is one of the two strawberry species used to create the modern garden strawberry.
